Some are better than others. But one saved me from having back surgery. I went to drs. for 2 weeks, was on all kinds of pain killers. The dr.s decided I needed surgery to remove one of my disks. I went to a chiropractor as kind of a second opinion. Someone carried me into his office, literally carried me. I walked out of his office that day. He had told me I might need surgery but give him 2 weeks first. I did and that was 15 years ago. He saved my back. I never had surgery, didn't need it. So I love chiropractors!
References :
It depends entirely on the individual practioner and the chiropractic method they practice. I've found that I get the best results from Gonstead chiropractors vs. Palmer or some of the others. Gonstead is actually pretty gentle, they don't do those scary neck-twisting maneuvers, and they encourage using ice on the inflamed areas vs. heat...which is what I've found most Palmer practitioners do - you know, hot packs on the back while you wait for the doctor to come in.

Again, though, you just need to find a chiro that listens to you and develops a plan for your treatment. The ones that just want you to come back week after week after week...I have trouble with them. A good chiropractor will be able to treat your symptoms effectively and get to the point where you don't need to see them frequently unless you chose to.

Finally, as for the question of whether chiropractic works, I believe it does - the caveat being you have the right doctor, as I already mentioned. It makes sense to me that if your spine is in proper alignment so that nerves aren't being impinged upon, you will naturally feel better and your organs will function properly. That's just my take, and people can feel free to disagree!
References :
for me, savior. a herniated disk in my lower back, I refused surgery. At one point, couldn't stand up straight, was at work, bent over, in severe pain, and literally crying. My orthopedic dr couldn't see me until Mon (this was a Friday) boss gave me a ph # to call, the chiroractor saw me an hour later, manipulated my spine and I was up and completely pain free. I actually hugged him I was so grateful. Went back twice a week for 6 mos, haven't had a problem since. That was 3 yrs ago.References :

It depends on the Chiropractor. Just don't keep going to the ones that push the L. Ron Hubbard book on you.

I had a Chiropractor named Dr. "Roberts" by the way who did a great job on my back. Then Dr. "Conrad" took over and made my back adjustments seem unmeaningful.References :
